Four of Cups
Upright Meaning
Flatness rather than conflict is what appears first: the partner is still there, the routine is intact, and interest has quietly drained out of it, so that an invitation from outside looks less appealing than staring at the wall. Singles may be sitting out an entire season, declining introductions for reasons they cannot name. At work it is the employee who has mentally left already, the meeting where nobody proposes anything, the idea dismissed before it is examined. Underneath the indifference sits an unmet need that nobody has said aloud, which makes the real subject of this card what you are refusing, and why. Regret over a choice already made frequently sits under the flatness.
Reversed Meaning
Interest comes back in this card's reversal. Sometimes it returns on its own, the way appetite returns after an illness; more often the reversal marks the moment someone finally accepts a change that had been waiting for months, such as an introduction taken up or a sabbatical agreed. In love it can mean a couple rewriting terms they had drifted into, or one person letting go of a comparison that had hollowed out a decent relationship. It also warns against swinging from apathy into restlessness, since the offer is real but enthusiasm still needs a plan. Possibility returns ahead of enthusiasm. Regret surfaces too, usually about an old choice only now being counted.

History
Divinatory decks before Waite read the four cups as a settled, satisfied arrangement: Etteilla counted it among the favourable cards, and the suit's fourth place traditionally carried contentment rather than boredom. It was the Golden Dawn's decan scheme that pulled the card toward the Moon in Cancer, and Waite and Pamela Colman Smith repaid that attribution with a scene no earlier deck had drawn, a seated man who has stopped looking at what he holds.
Symbolism
Everything needed for contentment is already in the frame, from the shade and the ground to three filled cups, and the figure has folded his arms across all of it. His posture is the message: not despair but refusal, a man examining the inside of his own head instead of the garden around him. The fourth cup arrives in a hand from a cloud, and he does not turn toward it, which is how the card comes to mean an offer declined or missed.
Advice
Before you turn down what is being held out, spend one minute describing it accurately to somebody else; apathy is a poor judge of offers. If the flatness is real and old, change one concrete thing instead of waiting to feel interested first.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Four of Cups a negative card, and does it mean a relationship is ending?
It reads more as an emotional brownout than as a terminal signal: the relationship is often intact and only the interest is missing, so what needs attention is the unspoken need behind the dullness. When the Eight of Swords or the Five of Cups appears alongside it, the problem has usually been accumulating a long time.
In a career question, what does the Four of Cups specifically ask you to do?
It points to an opportunity you have lost interest in, or to refusing meetings and staying silent. First work out whether this is temporary fatigue or a long-term mismatch. If it is the latter, proposing new duties or a different project is more useful than continuing to sit still.
